How does it work?

The first thing you should know about automatic bed leveling is that your printer must have some type of sensor or switch near the extruder that claims that your 3D printer can support automatic bed leveling.

When you start using an auto-leveling Anet A8, this sensor starts analyzing different locations of build platform to calculate the space between the nozzle and hotbed at one point.

This complete data will then be used to figure out an authentic location of a hotbed. This whole process is done according to the nozzle’s movement on XY axis.

The printer’s firmware actively uses this statistics so that nozzle’s position could be adjusted as it needs to move diagonally to a hotbed. If the build platform is a bit unleveled, printer’s firmware will make some adjustments to the Z-axis and ensure that the nozzle should always be distant away from the hotbed.

Inductive sensor

First, you need to update your firmware by replacing z probe with an inductive sensor to set up your printer for auto-leveling. Sensors are used to sense iron-based metals.

If you are using inductive sensor so detection range should be adjusted according to the metal type.

If 8mm inductive sensor is being used to detect aluminum (metal type) the sensing distance should be measured between 2.4mm or 3.6mm.

if you purchase the sensor (auto-leveling bed) make sure you test it’s sensing or detecting performance before installation.

In inductive sensor magnetic fields are used for detection and they are only able to detect metal. Inductive sensors are capable to detect metals even under the glass provided that the range is high.

Capacitive sensor

In capacitive sensor electrical fields are used for detection. They are able to sense materials including glass. It has some little screws for adjustment to fit your needs and material. the main disadvantage of the capacitive sensor is that it is affected by temperature and moisture.

A general recommendation by experts is that always use the capacitive sensor for glass sensor while for metals it is better to use the inductive sensor.
